What happened to the chalaza in my egg?

A few weeks ago, I had a chicken egg that was somewhat elongated and heavier than usual. I cracked it, and found that one of the chalazae had become thick and wiry, resembling a corkscrew. What could have caused this? Is this a step in the development of an embryo?
