Why is my laptop charger extremely hot?

I have a Gateway laptop (yea I know, not many people have these anymore =/ ) but I just noticed that my laptop charger is extremely hot! I don't know why, but I'm afraid that this means that my charger is going to break or something. Please help, I would greatly appreciate it!
