Bugs in my onions?!?!?

So just recently i discovered a peculiar swarm of winged insects that look like elongated flies in my kitchen. I soon found the source....MY ONIONS!. They were swarming my onion basket(which i disposed and sprayed with insecticide). Any idea what this type of insect is? I have goosebumps...Alot of goosebumps. Knowing what this type of insect will make me feel alot better :)
