Will humans ever evolve into a higher form of existence (not human)?

the idea that evolution works like a ladder, and that every species is trying to climb up, is very old. there is no such thing as a 'higher form of existence', it just that if we still had the fish tail from when we were fish, we probably wouldn't drive our cars as good as now. there needs to be an environment in which the 'survival of the fittest' rule can count.
